The Fabrication Lab, or FabLab, at the UVA School of Architecture is a center for empowering people with tools for making, prototyping, and construction at a range of scales, materials, and techniques. The FabLab Team is run by Melissa Goldman and Trevor Kemp—two full-time fabrication experts—and a Crew of undergraduate and graduate student assistants, all passionate about making and teaching. We are located on the 1st floor west wing of Campbell Hall and have over 7500 sq ft of project and shop space housing a number of tools for analog and digital fabrication. 

What is a makerspace, Fab Lab, or hackspace?

Think of it as a gym for inventors.

A makerspace is a collaborative workshop where people create with shared tools and skills; Fab Labs emphasize standardized digital fabrication (CNC, lasers, 3D printers); hackspaces lean toward experimental tinkering and tech hacking.

Much like a gym gives athletes pro equipment they can't fit at home, a great makerspace makes complex projects possible and far more efficient. Our Virtual Makerspace at the Garden State Makers Guild takes it further: We connect you online to pro tools and skilled makers across New Jersey—no physical visit or cluttered garage required!
